AZRR Build

Hello all,
New to the rotary scene. I bought my dream car 94 FD after my old chevy truck died. Had a little over 150,000 miles onto it with the original motor. I just needed a daily driver to get me to work and back. Nothing flashy or crazy fast. I bought a 94 FD with under 60,000 miles on it. Thought it was a low mileage car that was going to last me a little bit before i had to put any money into it. BTW didn't do any research on the car and that was a big mistake. I bought it from a older lady that was the original owner. This was her baby and I knew it was well taken care of. She all her records of what was done to the car. Two file folders full of everything that down to every oil change. So I didn't think there was going to be any problem with the car. I bought it in Phoenix AZ and drove it to Tucson. It was a 142 mile trip that ended badly. I just filled up the car at the gas station close to my house and was going to go home when the car stuttered and started to smoke real bad. I pulled over and tried to figure out what was going on. Again didn't know anything about turbo cars let alone rotaries. So I ended up calling for a tow back. Made it 1/2 way home and the chain fell off the car for the second time. I was tired and just wanted to get home so i drove it the rest of the way home. About a mile. The car was smoking so bad that one of the local cops followed me home. He thought the car was on fire and made sure everything was ok. He had pulled me over before and wanted to check out my motorcycle collection. I have about 12 bikes and race at a local track. That is why i don't need a fast or flashy car. So I talked to one of my good friends and he told me that the turbo was probably broken and that i would need a new one. He told me that he had one and would install it for me. It was going to take him to long so he told me about a local shop that would do it. That is where it sits today. Glen at Arizona Rotary Rockets has the car and it is going to be a beast when it is done. Turbine on the turbo separated and exploded going though the motor. It was going to be a quick turbo swap and turned into this.... Here is the build of the car. Exterior Shine "FEED" front bumper Shine "FEED" side skirts Shine "FEED" hood Shine under tray Shine "FEED" front canards FEED halogen turn signals FEED headlight cover +99 spec tail lights AME spec-r circlar wheels 18X9.5 18X10.5 Kumo ecsta ssx front 225/40/18 rear 245/35/18 Suspension K-sport coil overs cusco front and rear strut bars in carbon Interior and electronics Defi link meter gauges with link control unit (boost, oil temp, water temp) greddy profec B boost controller apexi power fc controller Flyrx 7 gauge pod wideband (don't know what one) TOMEI shift knob Comrade C's Short Shifter JDM armrest Rear seats battery relocated to the trunk Cooling Mishimoto Radiator Duel B+M oil coolers Greddy front mount intercooler with hard line piping cooling mist AI system (when i boost over 20 PSI) Motor and drive train Complete rebuild from AZRR including street port garrett T04S with a/r 1.00 tial blow off valve greddy waste gate greddy full exhaust system with resonated mid pipe greddy pulley kit complete wiring harness redone rx7 store down pipe HKS power ignitions Racing Beat light weight flywheel 3 bar map sensor ACT clutch with braided line AZRR oil pan brace OEM oil pan Garfinkle Engine Torque Brace Full fuel system redone with duel walbro fuel pumps and 1640 primary and secondary fuel injectors and new fuel rails. I think that is most of the work. The car has been down scene January some time and should been done around February. I got sent overseas and told the shop they have a year to build the car. BTW great shop and very understanding. Sometimes they tell me what I don't want to hear but they don't lie to me or bullshit me. We are hoping to hit around 500 rwhp at 23 psi but around 320 rwhp at 8 psi for daily driving. The first pics are when I got the car home. |

And the new motor getting built
Man that's a really clean FD. That really sucks for the car to already go on you before you even got it home, but when she up and running again it'll be worth every minute of waiting.
Wow, looks like she is going to be a monster once she's all finished!!!
I hope it is going to be a monster Brent. When I first started the project they said it was just a quick
turbo swap. I got some reliability mods for the car and then they torn into her. Found out that the motor needed a rebuild so we planed on twins for now and down the road a single. Glen at AZRR came across a good and cheap single kit and told me about it. That is when the fun started. Every time I talk to Glen I have more to add to the project. I dont think he wanted to do the project in the beginning but with the build the way it is going the car will look clean but will have the power to back it up. I am glad that I found a good rotary shop around and they are honest and very thou row. The car has been down for a long time but that is fine with me because I cant drive the car until I get back from my tour over in korea. I haven't rushed the car and that lets the shop work on other higher priority cars and lets them put the time they want and need into my car. It also lets them find the best parts for the build. |
so you will be station at DM tucson when your back in the states? i have a white FD with glen right now to, oh the joy of rotary ( like having a sharp stick in the eye when they brake), check out azrx7.com, or PM me when your in town, we should do a meet, hopefully my car iwll be done soon.
about yoru tires, why not go wider int he rear? 245 for a 10.5 rim is really streching it, i would go 275 or 285 for a better fit and more grip.
I want a little stretch on the tire. Densetsu helped me pick the tire. I want something stable in the corners.
I am also getting a set of drag radials for the car when i really want to run it. I am getting out of the AF in april but I bought a house in Sahaurita. I will be going to school when i get out. I know about azrx7 and I am a member. I was stationed at DM where did you work? I worked in the 57th a-10's new c model. And yes the joy of owning a rotary. |

Glen said that the motor is almost done and on the stand so i should have some pics of the
motor build up by the end of next week. Here are some pics of the wheels. I talked to one of the shops about powder coating the wheels but they havent gotten back to me so i think i am going to keep them the same color. I wanted to paint them gold but it is to much work to get a hold of the shop. |
keep the rims that way, nothign wrong with a bit of chome jsut as long as its not ghetto bling..
I was never in the military, i was just asking..I just picked up some et slicks also, so we should hit the track when you and the car get back.. What hp are you shooting for? I made 500rwhp on the dynopac, so about 550rwhp on a dynojet with pump and water. |
AzCamel looking to hit 500rwhp on the dyno in Tucson. Cant remember what dyno it is. I want to go to the track when i get back. I should be home in Feb some time and I will be going to arroyo as well. one of the road courses.
sweet, we should be at the same HP.. i hit 500 on a dynapac with 91 and water only. I've been to arroyo before, i did the road course on my zx636.
oh the only dyno i think that is left in tucson is the dynojet at Addictive racing, IA performance has moved and the dyno is gone

sweet good luck... i dont remember are you running AI? im just running water..
good luck and see you when you get back. |
Yes im running AI. just for high boost but i just read something about AI cleaning the engine and i think i will run it all the time. You ran your bike out in arroyo? i know you are part of the tsb club but i dont know if i meet you. did you ever go to bike night around march of last year? maybe i meet you. What times are you running at arroyo?
AzCamel, the link in your sig doesn't work. :)
change the o to an a and it will work rotary not rotory
Well first snag. stupid Mishimoto radiator has no mounting tabs or a drain hole. Looks like i will get a fluidyne or a mazdaspeed one. Leaning towards the mazdaspeed one. Get the best one right? Ordered the RON DAVIS RACING one. And also got a turbosmart fuel regulator today. All in all a good day, quality parts :)

Thanks guys for all the positive comments. I will have a pic of the car done real soon. Glen is taking it out next week for the brake in of the motor so we can run it on the dyno thursday. Here are some more pics. battery is installed and is tied down in the back. I hope the car looks good to the RX-7 crowed? I think it does.

So, I know that you're driving her this weekend. How's it going?? Stopped over and paid Glen for your smoked turn signals yesterday. Give us an update when you get a chance. Must be hard not being able to boost her huh? Be careful with the rain coming. I'd hate to read that you ended up off the road....
Congrats! Glen told me that you got a tune on her yesterday. Wow... record time from build through break-in and tune. Post a few pics of her when you get a moment. Have you gotten your 99 spec nose painted yet?

Well we finished it up, 350 at 11psi the dyno chart showed a huge climb, so if we could have gotten the boost controller to work it would have made more power for sure.
The t3 to4s was coming on almost instantly, had 8 psi at 2200 rpm...we were all shocked. Enjoy some of the pictures before the wheels and side skirts were installed. |
Looks great, props.
Nice - get the boost controller working right and lets see some 400+ numbers...

Sorry finally got some time and some pics to put up. really havent had anytime to do anything. I just moved to vegas and just been driving the car around. It drives like a dream. I still havent really gotten on the car. The girl got scared the first time i took her for a ride. Then the next time was when a z28 wanted to run. I dont like to put people in harm when I drive so I havent boosted it hard scene then. IT PULLS HARD!!! Here are some pics. I will get a new boost controller and get it re tuned down the road but for now it is fast.

Sweet. Moved to Vegas? Damn.... just when I thought we were going to get together and compare Glen's finished product. Hope you're back in Phoenix periodically. Looking great. I'll have to shoot a pic or two to Chris so she can see that her car is being well taken care of. Now, just some Tein suspension, get that sucka lowered, and you'll be SET!!
I got some k-sport suspension but i didnt want to drive from tucson to vegas with the chick in the car. She already had a problem with the noise so i dont think i could do the suspension. Some guys here will be helping me put the coil overs on so i will have some pics up when i get it set.
I know that you probably love the look of a big single exhaust, but if you switch to the Racing Beat dual tip you'll get the best of both worlds. Nice and quiet when cruising steady state, but nice and loud when you're on it. Trust me, your GF will love it. The only downer is the look.... not quite as impressive if you like the large can-style exhaust, but overall, I think it's the best of both worlds. Just a thought!
i put the silencer on it and drove it from tucson to vegas and it was real quite. I just like my exhaust now without the silencer. it is 3.75 all the way but it is has a loud tone at 3K. Now that she has the option to drive her car or mine i took the silencer off and im putting the coil overs on
Post some pics when you get those coilovers installed. That should lower the car nicely!!
Just got back from tucson and got the coil overs and boost contorler installed. made just under 420 hp and 336 lbft. Real happy with the set up. Installed an turbo smart Sport Compact (60mm) Sleeper boost contoler. Here are some pics.

Wow... turned out GREAT! Congrats. Glen and Tom were over last night and we ran mine again. Sounds incredible. I'll be happy to get through my break-in in tuning as well. Nice outcome on your ride, and congrats on the shocks. Really brings the ride height down to where it should be. Enjoy!
