Idle problems

Ok I own a NA 87 RX7. Whenever I crank the car in the morning time the car revs high then after it will rev at about 1K. Then maybe a few seconds later it shuts down on its own. The thing is, once the car warms up a little the car doesn't shut down but it idles at either 500 to 800 rpms (not sure if thats normal). Are there any ideas what the problem could be? And sorry for the poor description, this is my first time dealing with a rotary.:D

Intake vacuum leak
TPS bad or out of spec
Dashpot not adjusted properly
Idle not adjusted properly via BAC valve, idle set screw, etc.

normal

this is normal, supposed to be for heating up the exaust. Happens when car is in neutral on cold starts. put it in gear on start up and it will idel normal 800-850

Is your car doing a sustained Rev to 3k? or is it just hitting it then coming back down? Honestly I think your TPS might be out of adjustment as Ted said. The Accelerated Warm-up Procedure should hold the 3K rev for about 10 seconds or so. It doesn't work and needs to be eliminated if possible (or at the very least not allowed to kick on: By starting it in gear as awizzle414 said).

Check your TPS make sure it's reading 1v if you're setting it via voltage test style. I would also highly recommend upgrading your ECU to RTek2.1 and don't look back. But then again it might be more than you want or need... but come on you know you want to. Do it. Come on. It'll be fun.

yeah reading that again it sounds like the cold idle assist

its normal and its fine

OK I'll check it with the voltage meter. Oh man, peer...pressure....now I'm gonna have to check out some prices for the Rtek lol

I also have an 87' a good piece of information would be whether it sustains the 3000 rpms for a few seconds or not. If it does then your fine 750 rpms is what they are supposed to idle at. If you look on the inside of your hood thats what it says. when you start it up in the morning it may be shutting off because its still running a little to rich, give it a little gas for a few seconds and it will clear up it literally just sounds like it needs to clear its throught, once it leans out it will be good.

You got it right on the head. That's what I usually have to do in the morning.

I had the same problem and I juice it a bit, and it idles fine.
