You do them (Elliot's company) everyday, but when I do these its clamped against a dummy housing and the weld of the flange is at least 1 inch away from the sealing clamp surface. No one though makes a flange like this cause it costs more money to make it this long (tight ass's).
If its not done like that then it will *always leak* and is near impossible to rectify (if its a taper type or stepped type *Tial*) after welding.
One of the only decent clamp flange styles is the HKS version (on their T04Z's T51 turbo kits), very thick and resistant to deformation in service on engine and also during fabrication.
These are practical things you can implement to solve this problem that work long term.
