Spec Clutches
Ok Starting to think about putting a new clutch in my 91 vert. Nothing but stock right now. Clutch is fine but it is getting in the time frame for replacement. I have always heard good things about spec clutches. So I want to hear people's thoughts on them. Don't need something crazy like four pucks or anything like that. Only future plans for the car would be a mild street port. Unless I decide to put a turbo in her.

Go with an Exedy clutch. Great product and pricing!

Haha, you`re not supposed to laugh at your own jokes. But on topic: SPEC = garbage in my books. Never again.

SPEC is literally less than 30 mins from my house... They have never supported the local rotary guys or rotary guys in general... Also, I know more people with issues with SPEC clutches.
Exedy, They sponsor DGRR and are AWESOME company with great people working for them. Definitely recommend Exedy vs. any other clutches out there!

Yeah, whoever has told you nothing but good things about spec is either lying, or doesn't know what they're talking about. Spec is TRASH. Even at low power.

I can't speak for others but I purchased a spec stage III for my FD 6 years ago and it lived a very hard 25,000 miles life and never slipped once. Then I blew and apex seal.
Next clutch will be a Exedy just for the support they have given us at DGRR. I spoke with spec yesterday, (wearing my Exedy hat) at an event in Birmingham and they indicated there're so spread out with advertising that they can't do it all.

Kevin,
That's just an excuse... I've talked to the VP/president's wife and told them all about DGRR.. When I contacted them back no answer and no response. I've sent numerous emails and no response.. I've also had a conversation with someone and looks like SPEC isn't doing so hot.. Regarding your experience with SPEC clutches... this is what I'll say.. its like this... I grew up in a family that never ate steak. People used to tell me how great big 16 oz ribeye was and I was like.. its ok.. I'm happy with what I ate at home.... But when I finally tried it, I knew what I was missing! Exedy clutch vs. SPEC.. there is a difference in development and quality. Exedy Clutch as product and people are not even close in match with SPEC.

Now is there a certain vender for Exedy or do they give a discount for being RCC? Again I was looking for the best value for the money. I have used OEM clutches for years which if I remember right are Exedy or Dikin(sp). In my 90 GTU I have a racing beat clutch. Feels just fine and had no issues with it at all. But I am always on the lookout for something that might be better. Again I don't need much more than stock since the car is currently stock. It will get the Racing beat exhuast and when the motor gets weak a rebuild with a mild street port. So stage 1 would fit this bill perfectly. The only other driveline upgrade would be a lightweight flywheel. Looking at the steel racing beat one since it is close to stock and not looking for major drivablity issues.

Hmm... Let me ask Exedy and see if they will do some sort of group buy.. They usually don't do this kind of stuff as they sell it to various vendors.. but let me ask.
Kevin, Let me know when you want to get that steak.

I put in an Exedy clutch when it was time to retire my old stock one. I called their HQ first to inquire and they told me which one to buy as the turbos, NA and years mattered (Their website was confusing IIRC). When it came time to install, I discovered the key that allows it to align the clutch was for a Ford and called them for an explanation. They were apologetic for the mix up and send me the correct one free of charge. Pretty decent service.
Since then, the clutch has been fine. I say the product is good and works as told. Peace. |
