I am guessing this number comes from the $8k it was appraised at + the actual appraisal fee + the cost he had to pay to have it shipped, and then a few incidentals.

The appraisal is subjective, and the other expenses are just that, expenses. You can't get those back.

I will trade you heads up for a 2004 RX-7 Grand Touring.
