S4 Power Window adjustment

My power window, driver's side, 87. I've got it lubed up. It has the little ball chain. The window is now moving smoothly, but on the way down it wants to keep going at the extent of its travel, therefore making clacking noises when it can't go down any further.

At the opposite extreme, it does not want to reach the top leaving a crack on the top open at the extreme of its top travel. The window also seems to be moving laterally more than normal in its tracks.

OK, no one has an answer so far.

What I've been able to determine in talking to some others, the motor will probably have to be replaced as it might be a gear issue. I'll see if I have an extra one. Hopefully, if someone else has this problem, this solution will come up on the search.

have you looked at the gearing? there should be a plastic piece that the balls get picked up by. You will have to pull the regulator out to check this, but This can cause the window not to go up or down correctly. The only other thing to check is the tracks the window travels up and down in. That too can cause it to act wierd. But the downside is you need to pull the door panel off and the window out. Not hard, but if you have a second person it helps a little when you pull the glass out.

No, haven't checked the gearing. I thought there might be an adjustment, but at this age, why am I not surprised it needs to probably be replaced. That's probably what it is. The track on the forward side seems to be fine. I can't seem to see a track on the back side. I've got the door panel off, so no sweat there.
