I guess it all really depends on your intercooler set up. M2's intercooler, for instance, has the pipe that works with the stock 93-95 y-pipe. I'm sure it wouldn't be to difficult to cut the flange off and weld it to M2's pipe to have a bolt on design. You are right though, couplers are more prone to popping off and leaking boost.
