Inexpensive, decent air filters for a turbo
So, I'm gearing up to dive into my turbo project, and would like some recommendations for what to do for an air cleaner. I'm trying to keep it in the $25-35 range without ending up with total garbage.
I've been thinking something like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...n%3D2%26ps%3D5 Or this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Spect...Q5fAccessories Thoughts? Advice? Flames?

Don't go TOO cheap but make sure it will last a while.
The reusable ones are cool. I was reading that the shape and size of the filter help with how the air enters the manifold (for better low-end and top end) but I don't know if this mostly applies to carbed cars. I'm rocking a reusable one on the NA and a crappy Cotton one on the TII (which needs to go ASAP).

There's a reason every single vessel in the US Coast Guard uses a real K&N on their engines...
Real K&N all the way. They're marginally more expensive then those el cheapo ones, have a lifetime warranty, and provide the best filtration.

K&N isn't really an option for me. They're twice as expensive as the stuff I'm looking at. Same with Apexi (which, from all accounts, is a better filter than K&N). I might upgrade eventually, but for now I just need something to keep sand and rocks out while I put the extra money toward a wideband.

Don't say I didn't warn you when a chunk of foam comes off and destroys your turbo. I've been in the turbo field a long time and have seen it happen multiple times. Air filter first, wideband second.

Those ones aren't foam. They're multi-layer cotton-gauze, same as K&N. I appreciate the concern, though.

more importantly....what size is the turbo inlet? if you start talking T4 territory look into the air filters for diesels.

It's a stock S5 turbo, so 2 3/8" OD. I figured I'd get one with a 3" opening and reduce it to 2.5" just before it enters the turbo.
